Fangirling

keep-calm-and-love-your-fandoms

So what is fangirling exactly?

We hear this word a lot through out this blog. Okay, we read this word a lot. It’s pretty much the premise for this blog.

Well, fangirling is an assortment of things. It’s an inside joke in the form of a t-shirt that simply says, SHER-Locked. It’s a giddy school girl scream when we see an actor in two different fandom-verses (Benedict, I’m talking to you). It’s calling in sick to re-watch the entire series in anticipation for it’s premiere. It is madness and passion and an incredible love for something. Whether it’s Doctor Who or the NBA playoffs, (That’s a thing right?) we have all fangirled at one time or another.

Fangirling. It’s a thing. A wonderful thing.

So You Just Found Out Your Show Has Been Cancelled…

Firefly fans and really any Whedonite can relate to having their show cancelled. Just the mere thought of one’s show going belly up  can raise the blood pressure of the average devoted fan. It’s like losing a best friend or going through a horrible break up. Ice cream and tears are sure to be participants in the pity fest. For those non fandomers who have  friend going through cancellation, it is best not to engage if your only advice is, “It’s only a show.” Your head will be chewed. So get comfortable as we breakdown the stages of post fandom cancellation.

1: DENIAL: When you first hear or read that your show has been cancelled, we all go through doubt and disbelief.

So you read as much as you can to try to find an article dispelling this horrific news.

2. ISOLATION: But, oh no! It is true! The moment you always new would come but never prepared yourself for has indeed arrived. You have been a victim of cancellation.

girlonfloorblank

You feel numb and withdraw from any activities that don’t involve surfing IMDb and re-watching old episodes of the cancelled show.

Your friends are going to wonder where you are, but you don’t care. You have just experienced a very traumatic experience. You need alone time.

isolation

3. ANGER: But your friends decide to reach out to you despite telling them to stay away. But, as non- Fandomers, they won’t know your pain. They don’t know you devastation.

And as soon as they try to help you “feel better” by saying “It’s is just a show,”

stupid

Or, to join another Fandom.

But its not just another show and you cant just join another fandom, so you snap at them like a rubber band.

4. DEPRESSION: And after your friends have left you to your solitude, crying is likely to be expected.

crrry

You’ll cry on the floor. You will cry in the kitchen. You will cry at a Walgreen’s commercial. Just expect crying. A lot of crying.

5. ACCEPTANCE: But after all those tears subside, you might finally see the light at the end of the road.

So you call up your friends, even though they were wrong for minimizing your feelings toward a show.

And you decide you are okay to watch something other than the cancelled show, but not with out a chocolate buzz of course.

five

You made it! You finally made it out with little damage. And you can possibly be fine.

Unless, of course, some idiot tries to remake the show and therefore dishonoring its memory. (Because we all know the original was better.) If that happens, there will be war.

I Love You Like a Fangirl

Today is Valentine’s Day, and unlike many of my fellow Fandomers, I do not hate it. I think it is actually pretty nice.

Valentine’s does not have to be a crap fest of one-day-lovers. Any holiday that displays chocolate like its diamonds is a holiday I want to be apart of. So, if you’re feeling like this Friday has turned into a Singles Awareness Day, do a very nerdy thing about it.

Grab some friends who understand your Fandom, buy an over abundance of snacks, and binge watch your favorite show. That is better than any stupid-suit-up-wine-and-dine-fancy-shmancy-dinner.

It is time to make a date with Harry Potter, Buffy, Game of Thrones and any other Fandom you may be apart of. It is time to do what all good Fandomers do on any occasion, make it about the Fandom!

And while you’re over indulging in snacks and wonderful television and movies, check out these 20 Nerd-tastic V-day cards.

Joining a Fandom (a GIF Story)

When it comes to joining a Fandom, or Fandoms, we all start out the same. Normal people just living life. And then someone (more like the person who is the root of your turmoil) asks you if you ever seen a show. And you answer innocently enough…

nope

So they decide they want to introduce you to their Fandom since the entire series is now on Netflix. So you agree to sit and watch the first episode to see what all they hype is about. Whatever.

shrug

So you watch the first episode and toward the end you’re pretty much like, this is good.

lokilikethis

And then 3 am rolls around and you are still watching the show, because well you just want more!

more

And after watching three seasons non-stop, you finally emerge from your cave completely disoriented.

snowgif

You realize, being out of the real world for so long has left you a little rusty when it comes to human interaction.

sham

So you try to go to the friend that led you down the dark path of Fandoms to ask how to undo the process. And all he responds with is…

jensenlaughs

Because, when it comes to Fandoms,

DOCTORWHOYCW

So you accept your fate, and turn to the only people that understand you. Other Fandomers.

Because, in the end, when it comes to Fandoms, you’ll regret nothing!

Happy Fandoming!
