Fangirling

keep-calm-and-love-your-fandoms

So what is fangirling exactly?

We hear this word a lot through out this blog. Okay, we read this word a lot. It’s pretty much the premise for this blog.

Well, fangirling is an assortment of things. It’s an inside joke in the form of a t-shirt that simply says, SHER-Locked. It’s a giddy school girl scream when we see an actor in two different fandom-verses (Benedict, I’m talking to you). It’s calling in sick to re-watch the entire series in anticipation for it’s premiere. It is madness and passion and an incredible love for something. Whether it’s Doctor Who or the NBA playoffs, (That’s a thing right?) we have all fangirled at one time or another.

Fangirling. It’s a thing. A wonderful thing.

So You Just Found Out Your Show Has Been Cancelled…

Firefly fans and really any Whedonite can relate to having their show cancelled. Just the mere thought of one’s show going belly up  can raise the blood pressure of the average devoted fan. It’s like losing a best friend or going through a horrible break up. Ice cream and tears are sure to be participants in the pity fest. For those non fandomers who have  friend going through cancellation, it is best not to engage if your only advice is, “It’s only a show.” Your head will be chewed. So get comfortable as we breakdown the stages of post fandom cancellation.

1: DENIAL: When you first hear or read that your show has been cancelled, we all go through doubt and disbelief.

buffyblank

So you read as much as you can to try to find an article dispelling this horrific news.

research

2. ISOLATION: But, oh no! It is true! The moment you always new would come but never prepared yourself for has indeed arrived. You have been a victim of cancellation.

girlonfloorblank

You feel numb and withdraw from any activities that don’t involve surfing IMDb and re-watching old episodes of the cancelled show.

tumblr_mkoqw1znf81qhtpi8o2_r2_500

Your friends are going to wonder where you are, but you don’t care. You have just experienced a very traumatic experience. You need alone time.

isolation

3. ANGER: But your friends decide to reach out to you despite telling them to stay away. But, as non- Fandomers, they won’t know your pain. They don’t know you devastation.

angrybanging

And as soon as they try to help you “feel better” by saying “It’s is just a show,”

stupid

Or, to join another Fandom.

yourstupid

But its not just another show and you cant just join another fandom, so you snap at them like a rubber band.

4. DEPRESSION: And after your friends have left you to your solitude, crying is likely to be expected.

crrry

You’ll cry on the floor. You will cry in the kitchen. You will cry at a Walgreen’s commercial. Just expect crying. A lot of crying.

justdonecrying

5. ACCEPTANCE: But after all those tears subside, you might finally see the light at the end of the road.

lookinginwindow

So you call up your friends, even though they were wrong for minimizing your feelings toward a show.

friend

And you decide you are okay to watch something other than the cancelled show, but not with out a chocolate buzz of course.

five

You made it! You finally made it out with little damage. And you can possibly be fine.

clapping

Unless, of course, some idiot tries to remake the show and therefore dishonoring its memory. (Because we all know the original was better.) If that happens, there will be war.

Fandom HQ: An App Idea

Screen Shot 2014-02-24 at 3.11.38 PM

This is the dashboard which will display all relevant information to the person that has logged in. New trailers, upcoming showings, and relevant information will be displayed here.

For those of you who don’t know, I created this blog for a class. And alas! Another assignment. This one is suppose to be about an app I would create that goes together with my blog. So my fellow Fandomers, brace yourselves. What you are about to see is an imaginary app of my own creation. *Hold all applause and questions for the comment section below!

Behold! Fandom HQ. An app that fits every Fangirl and Fanboy’s needs. Think IMDb. Think Pintrest. Think Spotify playlists. All rolled into one, this baby is sure to please the everyday Fan wanting their Kindom’s information at their fingertips. Information on whether the show is coming back for another season or not. Information about what is on tonight and if they released the new trailer. All information that can be found on Fandom HQ.

Fandom HQ works very much like IMDb. You receive information about the shows, actors and movies you love. The difference is you can customize it. It is just for you. Like Spotify or Pintrest, you can create Fandom playlists or boards. So when you are logged in, your dashboard will contain all information that is relevant to you.

The first thing you do is create an account. After, you are asked to start choosing your shows, actors and movies you would like to see pop up on your dashboard. Once you have searched and added it to your list, your dashboard will display any trailers that are related to your list. Information about what is coming on tonight and any news about said show/film/actor.

Pretty neat huh? Would you say it is Nerd-tastic? Anyways, this is only an idea guys. This was for class and I am not some super genius that can make apps willy-nilly. So do not get so over-excited.

-With love, Nerd.

Early sketches of the app

This is what the search page will look like. You type in the show/film/actor and once you select, you simply add to the list.

I Love You Like a Fangirl

Today is Valentine’s Day, and unlike many of my fellow Fandomers, I do not hate it. I think it is actually pretty nice.

Valentine’s does not have to be a crap fest of one-day-lovers. Any holiday that displays chocolate like its diamonds is a holiday I want to be apart of. So, if you’re feeling like this Friday has turned into a Singles Awareness Day, do a very nerdy thing about it.

Grab some friends who understand your Fandom, buy an over abundance of snacks, and binge watch your favorite show. That is better than any stupid-suit-up-wine-and-dine-fancy-shmancy-dinner.

It is time to make a date with Harry Potter, Buffy, Game of Thrones and any other Fandom you may be apart of. It is time to do what all good Fandomers do on any occasion, make it about the Fandom!

And while you’re over indulging in snacks and wonderful television and movies, check out these 20 Nerd-tastic V-day cards.

Joss Whedon Killed My Favorite Character

A rant on Joss Whedon

Now it’s no secret that Joss Whedon has a reputation for, uh well, you know, um killing off characters.

23110890cd13441c42d436c3e36662a7

I mean, he is really known for killing off people.

8de6f93acb0f6075e597e54c41e8c426

I know. I’m still upset over the Spike’s death in the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

tumblr_mmv71e6qOx1qatdbgo1_500

And now, he’s talking of killing a major character in the new Avengers movie, Avengers:  Age of UltronThis man is mad with power.

fb3301fc94dd9a7e0326e71c1868b800

Is it not enough that you killed Coulson in the first movie?

267d8686df5e56f1277c3afd16705973

Oh, wait. Coulson wasn’t his idea. Well, I guess he is not all that bad. I mean maybe we should talk about his good traits. Yeah?

 tumblr_m784v1xcV91rrqpumo1_500

Okay, um well. Good traits. Hmm. Oh yeah, he is definitely a fangirl.

 1ac85c529048354e3c8de2ac68318628

And well, he seems like a normal person.

1bd049dfddd793f3813ca6b11b31f579

And he has words, of um, well wisdom.

b59b270fa88594f3c01724ee3b491997

But we shouldn’t give him too much credit. After all, he is Joss Whedon, lurking around the corner just waiting to kill off your favorite character.

tumblr_mbwt5hDVRF1rcj7apo1_500

So remember, when watching anything created by Joss Whedon, watch out. Joss Whedon, you smug bastard!

A Fandom is Calling

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No! It’s a tardis!

b839a099b31a55eef77a3ad3447caf9f

They call themselves Whovians, and Sherlockians, and Tributes, Potterheads, and Trekkies and Whedonites. They go by many names, but they are all apart of a Fandom.  A combinations of the words “Fan” and “Kingdom,” Fandoms are a subculture consisting of groups of people who share a common interest. Of course, this definition comes from Wikipedia, who has drastically underestimated the meaning of the word Fandom and the meaning of being in one.

6a1888b0e8344bcd2c3b4daaf0dd3891

It can be hard to explain what a Fandom is exactly to someone on the outside. Having muggle parents, (Harry Potter reference), I have on many occasions had my enthusiasm met with blank expressions when talking about my Fandom. But nevertheless, I shall try to explain it.

a7628e352b9bd247a0c98c8d6c3bede9

To be apart of a Fandom is to be apart of a secret world. To be apart of an inside joke. They are a fascinating group of people who hold extreme passions for television, comic books, movies, and those who write them.  I am proud to say that I am apart of several Fandoms. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my jam growing up. Then the Avengers. Then Doctor Who and Sherlock, and long story short, I became consumed by these worlds. To say the least, I fell in love. I fell in love with a fictional world.

82cd8c76e81005fea8a9194661fb2ad9

Fandom love is a thing. I promise. And anyone who visits this site knows, or will learn to know that Fandom love runs deep. There is a certain spark that lights up the eyes of a person talking about their Fandom. Now while they may be dismissed as nerds, it is the deep passion and the way they love that separates Fandoms from regular fan bases. And it would be wrong of me to talk about Fandoms and nerds and passion without bringing up Star Trek: The Next Generation actor, Will Wheton who eloquently put it,  “The way you love that, and the way you find other people who love it the way you do is what makes being a nerd awesome.
